Embracing the Spiritual Quest
Marie-Amélie Chéreau is a French contemporary artist and novelist, renowned for her luminous and spiritual palette-knife oil paintings. Her artistic journey is not just a means of expression but a spiritual quest to capture emotions and experiences that transcend words. Chéreau's work is deeply influenced by her personal experiences, particularly her journey of self-healing, resilience, and spirituality. Painting serves as a refuge and a vital outlet for moments when words fall short of expressing her inner world. Her artistic approach is influenced by Impressionist works, abstract painters like Kandinsky and Rothko, and the artist of “outrenoir,” Soulages. This blend of influences, combined with her own experiences, allows her to create paintings that are both powerful and introspective.
Through her art, Chéreau aims to offer viewers more than just an aesthetic experience. She invites them into a profound reflection on love, spirituality, and the human condition. Her paintings are a meditation on unity within diversity and the infinite within the finite, capturing the essence of light and shadow in a way that resonates deeply with those who engage with them.
Chéreau in her own words
Since childhood, oil painting has been my preferred language of expression. It has taken me almost half a century to fully embrace my vocation as an artist. My journey has been anything but typical: artist, businesswoman, entrepreneur, speaker, and author. My paintings are a means to convey energy, light, emotions of love, peace, and joy. I transmit energy. A collector once told me about one of my paintings, “I want your energy in my home.” This encapsulates my artistic mission. I seek to push the boundaries of art by demonstrating that every painting carries energetic vibrations that nourish the viewer. To contemplate a piece of art is not merely a visual experience; it is a spiritual, ethereal one. The viewer receives the energy that the artist has “channeled” into the work. I am deeply convinced that paintings can heal, energize, and assist. Gazing at a painting is to feed on the soul of the artist. My recent exhibitions and works have explored themes of light, duality, complementarity, and perfect love. The next step is Unity: unity in techniques, in shadow and light. Until now, I have worked on distinct collections with different styles: pure figurative work, geometric lines painted with brushes, and textured abstracts painted with a palette knife. My current project is to bring these together, to merge lines, the palette knife, and figurative elements into one.
“Giving back” is also central to my mission. More than anything, I wish to contribute to bringing more light and love into the world through art.
